W U Y I S H A N
Like Xiamen, Wuyishan is not where most foreign tourists will venture to for their first few trips to China. It
took me more than 20 trips to this country before I finally found my way here. (& yes, I lost count of the
number of times I've been to China!) It is however, due to its location in southern China, a favorite short
excursion for most travelers from South East Asia. That is not to say there are fewer tourists here than
elsewhere. When I was here that very weekend, it was packed with local tourists. & mind you, it was during
those times that one realised that this is the most populated country in the world & began to grasp the
exact meaning of a population 1+ billions. Reality finally began to sink in... well, not quite yet. Afterall, there
were not even a million visitors a year in Wuyishan. But you do get the drift on a packed mountain...

For all its annoyances (I hate it when any mountain is crowded), one doesn't get lonely when traveling in
China though. Especially when you speak the language. Otherwise, it could be hell for you ;-) It's akin to
traveling in Russia... but, unlike Russia, one can always hire guides here for a minimal fee. Although, I don't
like to have a stranger tagging along when I travel most times. As for hiking on mountains in China, it is best
to get a guide to tag along though. Not so much for company but mountains here in China cover a large area
& most are not well marked (even in Chinese, not to mention other languages) & a good guide will save you
lots of time & distances in your "conquests"! Ample time is also needed & never hike on the day you've to
catch a flight! All in all though, hiking in China is one of the experiences not to be missed in life!
SANTA LUCIA

No, it was not the Grand Canal. Neither was it Venice of the Orient.
But, it was fun at a much affordable price & certainly nothing
short of a grand masterpiece of God's works.

Here in the midst of towering mountains & rocks, the marvel lies
in realizing how minute & insignificant one is compared to what
has been here since even before mankind. Yet, on that very day
we past through here we essentially became part of the scenery &
hence part of history. Perhaps in God's grand scheme of thing,
HIS presence is what we needed to feel & experience. I'm no
expert but I do know on that very day & on many other days like
when visiting the Grand Canyon & Glen Canyon, I saw HIM. & that
is the most important human experience of it all!
