北京 (Běijīng). Popularly known in English as Peking. This is the 2008 Summer Olympics city.

BEIJING, capital of China, is the gateway city to The GREAT WALL OF CHINA, one of the 7 wonders of the
world! A symbol of Chinese genius the Wall involved more than 20 dynasties over a period of 2000 years to
construct! It is said to be the only visible man-made structure from the outer space.

Beijing is also the cultural center of China (23 public libraries, 46 cultural centers, 126 museums & exhibition
halls, 42 professional art ensembles & troupes!). Many historical palaces & temples were built here. To visit
Beijing is to get a little idea of what China is about... culturally. Politically, it is also the seat of power of the
People's Republic of China. It is  however best for all foreigners to stay clear of the internal affairs of the
biggest communist country in the world! Trust me, you wouldn't want to interfere with domestic issues! By all
means hike the Great Wall, but please, please do not ever march the
Tiananmen Square!!!
Forbidden City (Zijingchen)

The largest palatial compound in the world.
Located in the center of Beijing, it was the seat of power
during the Ming & Qing dynasties (1368-1911). Measuring
750 meters from east to west & 960 meters from north to
south, the 720,000 sq meter city must be explored on foot
when you make your way to this city. Southern part of the
Forbidden City once served as the Emperors' work area.
Northern part was the living quarters.

Forbidden City was named as such because it was off limits
to the commoners for 500 years. It is now officially named
as Palace Museum. Forbidden City was once home to 2
dynasties of emperor, the Ming (1368-1644), the Qing
(Manchu) (1644-1911). Now it is one of the biggest tourist
attractions to the city of Beijing.
