Ayutthaya - the land of wat(s) & ancient ruins. An ancient city & Thai capital for 417 years, Ayuthaya was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong. 33 kings & 5 dynasties had ruled from this city until it was destroyed in 1767 by the Burmese. About 1 1/2 hours (76 km) from Bangkok by bus, this ancient city is a great place for a day-excursion especially if you love ancient ruins & wish to be away from the maddening crowd.
Ayutthaya is a special place... here you'll see architecture you'll probably not see elsewhere (at least I haven't). It is somewhat like the Thai version of the Angkor. Ruins to be discovered & explored. For those who love to meander through history, this is the Thailand you should come to see. It is alluring & it is hot! It is also a World Heritage site. Ayutthaya sizzles!

IF LOOKS CAN KILL
Everywhere in this ancient city, you see many statues without heads.
Ok, this is what I can't grasp. Aren't those "stolen" heads something which are supposed to be sacred? & if so, why would the buyers in the "rich" & developed countries want to purchase something which in effect support a sinful act? & who is to know if anyone has lost his/her life in trying to keep the country's heritage within its own boundaries?
Poverty is miserable. I can understand why some people do what they had to do. But for the rich who bought these pieces... they are hardly rich, imho.
